NON-LUCRATIVE VISA
Planning on retiring or taking a sabbatical in Spain? Find out everything you need to know about the Non-Lucrative Visa in Spain - the perfect solution for individuals who want to live and enjoy life in Spain without engaging in any form of employment.
-
The non-lucrative residence visa grants non-European citizens a permit to reside in Spain, as long as they can prove they have sufficient financial means to support themselves and do not engage in any economic or professional activity.
-
This visa does not allow you to work; it is also not for remote workers. Those interested in working for a foreign company remotely from Spain will have the option of applying for the Digital Nomad Visa.
This visa does allow you to study in Spain by enrolling in an educational institution.
-
This permit is for one year, renewable successively for another two years. After five years of uninterrupted residence, you can apply for permanent residence. Nationals of some countries may apply for citizenship before that time (Take a look at “Become a Citizen” below).
-
With this permit, you can bring your family with you, as long as you meet the economic solvency requirements that vary according to the number of people included in your visa.
-
At the Consulate General of Spain in the area of your residence.

There may be small variations in the requirements depending on the Consulate, but the main requirements are the following:
Not to be in Spain in an irregular situation.
Not to be prohibited from entering the Schengen area.
Sufficient funds: you have to ensure that you can support yourself without needing the Spanish government to do so: 400% IPREM (2.400€/month ) for the main applicant and 100% IPREM (600€/month) per additional family member. If you are going to renew your permit for 2 more years, you will have to have twice as much to qualify for the 2 year renewal.
There are different ways to prove your economic solvency: savings accounts, pensions, dividends, income from rented properties. The quantities must always be to your name and available to you.
Private medical insurance: The insurance company has to operate within the national territory (Spain). You will have to proof to be covered (equiparable fo he public health system) for the entire duration of your stay in Spain and must not include any exclusions or co-payments.
Certificate of criminal record from the countries where you have lived the previous 5 years.

Some Consulates also ask for accommodation in Spain (up to a year rental agreement or plane ticket bookings).
